Messenger Food Recommendation

Mobile App Design

This is a hackathon project I worked on during my time at Facebook as a product design intern. I worked together with Jeffery Liu, Jae Lee, Dmytro Soroka, and Jizhou Xu. As a designer in this hackathon team, I designed the user interface and put together a prototype using Origami to demonstrate how it works.

Initial design idea

As we see messenger has a lot of potentials of being smarter and guess what the users what to help them achieve their goals one step further, suggesting uber rides being one example, our hackathon team wanted to design a restaurant suggesting feature for Messenger as we've seen that discussing what to eat and where to eat is a very common conversation happening in our daily lives. This restaurant suggesting feature can parse the food related keywords in chatting threads and give suggestions of nearby restaurants.

Detect keywords

Detect keywords

The Messenger will parse the thread conversation between users, and highlights the food related items. User can tap on the keyword to see recommendations.

Suggesting restaurants

Suggesting restaurants

Tap on the food related keyword will bring up a tray of cards about nearby restaurants. Users can scroll horizontally to quickly see what's around.

Click on the restaurant card can bring up a larger card view with more detailed information about that place including location, reviews and more.

I used Origami to prototype the flow using this restaurant suggesting feature of Facebook Messenger.
